^that kind of contrived impersonal officiousness is prevelent here in Australia too.

My pet hate is the phrase "thanking you very much" when a shopkeeper or policeman says that, what's being communicated is that "someone" is thanking me - just not the person speaking.

Not long until we all have cameras and locator devices embedded in our bodies, along with a persistent wireless internet connection to allow gov't officials to see exactly what you're doing at any given time. Privacy is going bye-bye. But the children will be safe!
