Having just taken a quick look through the viral channel, I felt it was time to renew my hatred of said channel. It's time to get rid of it or get it an owner; one who can read, hopefully.

Looking through the first couple pages of videos, it appears that approximately 1/3rd of the videos in this channel actually belong in this channel.

Maybe changing the channel name/invocation to *viralad would help? I'm now thinking the 4.0 rollout should include something that makes it more evident what channels are for.

It does not necessarily need to go, but I do agree that we should all put our heads together before 4.0 and think about doing something about the channels.

Some channels always overlap, so maybe we could make them a subset of others? (grindhouse - cinima, for instance). In the end I think we could reduce complexity this way and still sneak it in, for those who desire it.

It was always a bad idea.

I have tagged stuff CLEARLY that was viral and it is almsot always removed. Almost as worthless as books (when any video involving words, scripts, novels is considered a book, ie. movies, tv shows based on novels, etc)

The only time I've used this one is on internet commercials that look like online videos but then end up having product placement in the end betraying it as a "Commercial."

So really, it is a channel for internet commercials. I like the channel but with no one to moderate it - what's the point? It is just abused because no one knows what a true 'viral' video is. Most of the time a viral doesn't even look like a viral, which is their point. It is meant to mix in with the general population of net videos.

Perhaps the problem also continues because every video wants to be viral, that's kind of the point. It's why people post videos in the first place.

Now that I think about it, you're surly correct - too much room for abuse - without a moderator especially!

The Books channel is not about anything involving words, asshat. All movies and TV shows have scripts, but not all movies and TV shows are based on books. My purpose in creating the Books channel was to show how significant books still are even in our modern age.

Now if you want to talk about useless, let's talk about Election08. It was already covered by *Politics, except that it had a shelf life, which has already expired. Should have made a playlist.

Viral is a channel I never remember to use, and is basically a type of *commercial, but I see no reason for it to have to go away.

Also, joederth, let your hatred of the books channel go. It's just petty and sad. Don't you have better things to worry about?

If you removed all improper *virals, what would the viral channel be populated with? Not much, from the looks of it. Every time someone mentions it being crap, the consensus is that it will work out in time and that people just need to be made aware of its purpose. Mind you, I've been saying 'get rid of it' since I joined 2 years ago and nothing has changed in that time. The idea that it can be improved is a pipe dream.

I completely agree. I think the viral marketing gimmick is on its last legs as well. Now it's just a corporate buzzword that every conglomerate CEO throws around to sound hip, and every single product needs a "viral" campaign now, from toilet paper to new cars.

Most of my copy-writer/ad-design friends are sick to death of viral bullshit, and after the ATHF fiasco a few years back, I think the entire concept of a viral campaign was doomed.

VS 4.0 could use some help in regards to channel assignments.

I think the Umbrella Corp would like to take over that channel but would probably change the invocation to *tviral.

I wouldn't miss it. I have never invoked * viral or visited the channel directly.
